Description

Sheldon Mayer - Lindbergh Kidnapping Pilot Single Panel Gag Cartoon Original Art (1935). Mayer busied himself during the earlier 1930s with an ambitious regimen of audition-type cartoons, searching for work. His eventual berth at the just-forming DC Comics would see Mayer becoming an influential Golden Age editor, in addition to his cartooning assignments. This seemingly cryptic piece is actually a peculiar reference to the Lindbergh kidnapping trial of 1935, with its "Welcome to Flemington [New Jersey]" banner (upper left) and a caption reading, "...betcha Reilly did it" -- referring to defense counsel Edward J. Reilly. Ink over blue pencil on toned Bristol board, with blue-pencil shading. Image area, 6.75" x 9.5". Edge wear and some marginal paper loss. Very Good condition. Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity.
