Description

Rudolph Dirks and Gus Mager (as Watso) The Captain and the Kids and Hawkshaw the Detective Conjoined Sunday Comic Strips Original Art dated 11-14-43 (United Feature Syndicate, 1943). Two large-scale Sunday whoppers, joined to create one immense spread. The Captain and the Kids strip involves a race to "der old svim hole". Below, the Hawkshaw the Detective strip (a Sherlock Holmes spoof) involves an angry man and a tastefully challenged newspaper food editor's recipe for leftovers. Mager, one of the crucial inventors of comic-strip visual grammar, is emulating the near-Cubist style of his friend Clifford Sterrett, of Polly and Her Pals. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an overall image area of 29.5" x 22.5". Moderate age-toning, with marginal staining and moisture wrinkling at the seam. In Good condition.
