DescriptionRudolph Dirks and Gus Mager (as Watso) The Captain and the Kids and Hawkshaw the Detective Conjoined Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-22-43 (United Feature Syndicate, 1943). A delightful pairing of large-scale Sunday funnies, in one huge spread. The Captain/Kids strip involves a "trip" across a creek, and below, the Hawkshaw strip (a Sherlock Holmes spoof) has Mr. Henpecko deliberating on whether or not to bring his boss (a very cute woman) home for dinner, as his wife has suggested (not knowing who his boss is). Mager, one of the chief architects of comic-strip design, is emulating the near-Cubist style of his friend Clifford Sterrett of Polly and Her Pals. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 22.5" x 29.5". overall light toning, with moisture rippling, and a tear in Panel 8 of the Hawkshaw strip. In Very Good condition.
