Description

Rube Goldberg When Baby Cries... Comic Strip Original Art (McNaught Syndicate, c. 1920s). Comics innovator Goldberg has an award named in his memory from the National Cartoonists Society. Though comparably adept at political satire and eccentric wordplay, Goldberg remains best known for his outlandish pseudo-inventions -- exemplified in this elaborate contraption designed to put the quietus on squalling infants. The composition includes a right-hand sidebar (speaking of wordplay) from Goldberg's companion series, Mike & Ike -- They Look Alike. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, approximately 17" x 4.5". Some portions of the ink-line and hand-lettering have faded with age, suggesting a very light pen-stroke or possibly watered ink, but the image remains intact and eminently readable in all its boisterous brilliance. Very Good condition. From the Estate of Jeff Gorrell.
