Description

Richard F. Outcault Buster Brown Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst American-Examiner, 1908). A settlement with a former publisher had allowed Outcault to continue using his Buster Brown characters for the Hearst newspapers -- as long as the title remained the property of the New York Herald. Hence the title of this immense Buster full-pager from 1908 (otherwise undated): "The Armor of His Ancestor Causes a Drop in Steel." The gag is a classic slapstick riot, with a seemingly animated suit of armor proving to be Buster in disguise. Great eye appeal, here, with a partial job of post-publication watercolor tinting, likely by Outcault himself. Original tearsheet included. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 23". Overall age toning, with chipping along the borders, chips out of three corners, pinholes, and a few tears from the margins into the image area. A portion of the separate upper title card is included. Overall in Good condition, which for its age, rarity, and significance, is impressive! From the Outcault Family Collection.
