    Description

Richard F. Outcault Buster Brown Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-25-06 (Chicago Sunday American, 1906). By the time of this gigantic page (significantly larger than published), Outcault had developed a lucrative Buster Brown merchandising franchise -- with toys, shoes, and other consumer products bearing the familiar likenesses. Upon moving the feature to a different publishing company in 1906, Outcault found himself caught up in a cycle of lawsuits and counter-suits over the title and its distinctive characters. The artist's rambunctious humor persisted: This ferociously funny entry finds Buster using a wolf-skin rug to play a trick on his dog, Tige, who responds appropriately. The closing "moral lesson" (an Outcault trademark) is suitably sarcastic. Partially tinted in watercolor, likely by the artist himself. Accompanied by a tearsheet from an original printing. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 18" x 23". Age toning. Very Good condition. From the Outcault Family Collection.
