    Description

Raeburn Van Buren Abbie an' Slats Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-11-68 (United Feature Syndicate, 1968). The perpetually delightful Abbie an' Slats was a creation of Li'l Abner's Al Capp, drawn from 1937 onward by master illustrator Van Buren and written (since 1945) by Capp's brother, Elliot Caplin. While sustaining a basis in humor and intrigue, Caplin dealt increasingly in emotional and medical issues -- including this episode's concern with the problem of anorexia nervosa. Van Buren's exquisite artwork captures poignantly the plight of the afflicted character. Pen-and-brush inking over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 22.5" x 15". Aside from a glue-stained logotype stat and two X-Acto Knife border trims (second tier, first gutter), the art is in Excellent condition.
