Description

Mort Walker Beetle Bailey Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-16-65 (King Features Syndicate, 1965). Lt. Sonny Fuzz, junior officer at the Army's Camp Swampy, tries to pull a Marlon Brando/Wild One act -- but remains as laughable as ever. Sarge Snorkel is chagrined, and Pvts. Beetle Bailey and Killer Diller are unimpressed. Fuzz is Walker's semi-autobiographical vision of himself as a 1940s graduate of Officer Candidate School, "green around the gills and entirely too self-serious," as the artist told comics historian Michael H. Price during the 1980s, adding: "The 'Fuzz' name is short for peach-fuzz, as in lacking in the manly whiskers department." A personalized inscription hails colleague Ferd Johnson, creator of the classic slapstick strip Moon Mullins. Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 17.25" x 5.75". Light toning, with adhesive staining and partial peeling in the Zip-film areas. Very Good condition.
