Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-1-45 (Chicago Tribune, 1945). This mid-forties Sunday featuring Terry Lee, Hu Shee, and Hotshot Charlie is a first-rate example of Milton Caniff's talent as both artist and writer. These masterful panels spotlight his dramatic use of black silhouette shapes, his command of facial expressions, his breakneck pacing, and his superb storytelling. In 1946, due to its rousing success from its debut, Milton Caniff requested but was denied ownership of Terry and the Pirates. As a result he left the title and created his new feature, Steve Canyon. This later Caniff Terry Sunday has an image area that measures 19" x 24". Aside from glue staining to the title logo stat, and a cut between panel tiers two and three, the art is in Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
