Description
Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-10-39 (Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, 1939). The prevailing suspense and action of Terry and the Pirates depend largely upon Caniff's well-timed lulls and interludes, designed to develop the characters. This one features tough guy Pat Ryan and boyish Terry Lee in support of a key developing player, an innocent Southerner named April Kane. Caniff's handling of April's drawl is natural and affecting. The facial expressions and body language say as much as the dialogue. A pronounced blue wash (backgrounds) is an artistic touch in itself, but originally the tinting served merely to cue the engraving plant to add greyscale shadow-tones. The ink-over-graphite composition has an approximate image area of 20" x 5.75" on toned Bristol board. The margins show extensive adhesive staining. Very Good condition.Auction Info
