Description

Michael H. Price (as Sam Raimiller) "Necromancy" (Nancy Parody) Comic-Strip Audition Original Art (Cremo Studios, 1994-95). Price was among a few cartoonists invited to audition to draw United Features' Nancy after Jerry Scott had moved along to develop such features as Baby Blues and Zits. Price proposed a return to the style of original creator Ernie Bushmiller, with an Underground Comix attitude. "Too edgy," said the Syndicate Suits, whereupon Price made his subsequent samples even edgier. This example bears a mock-signature of "Sam Raimiller", a wink-and-nod to Horror movie producer Sam Raimi. Ink and white-paint highlights over blue pencil on REGCO LGL-brand Bristol board. (Also auditioning were Underground Comix pioneer Gary Hallgren and neo-Underground gagman Ivan Brunetti. The assignment eventually went to Muppets cartoonists Guy and Brad Gilchrist.) Image area, 15.5" x 4.5". Faint toning, and in Excellent condition. From the Michael H. Price/Cremo Studios Archive.
