Matt Baker Flamingo #61 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Phoenix Features, 1952). Baker is in top form in this episode from the serialized adventures of a heroic Romani dancer. Writer/editor Ruth Roche raved about "the magic touch of Matt Baker's brush," and here is a sample of what she meant. Definitive of the comics' "good girl" art idiom -- and beyond that, a concise masterpiece of radial composition within the linear confines of a weekday strip. Baker is hailed as a pioneering African-American comics artist in the new-for-2020 book, Invisible Men, from Yoe Books/IDW Publ. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The image area measures 19" x 5". Age-toning, spot-staining, edge tears with the tear on the bottom edge into Panel 2 mended by tape on the back, discolored text paste-ups with adhesive seams on a lettering repair, rounded corners with the top right missing, whiteout touch-ups, and handling wear.
