    Description

Martin Branner Winnie Winkle, the Breadwinner Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-7-43 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1943). Long before Zippy the Pinhead, there was Denny Dimwit, the scene-stealing microcephalic goof of Winnie Winkle. Branner had been a Vaudeville entertainer, and therefore no stranger to the freak-show scene. He modelled Denny after a famous carnival pinhead named Schlitze -- who also was among the inspirations for Bill Griffith's signature character, Zippy. This example of Denny's outrageous prominence also features Perry Winkle (Winnie's kid brother) as the straight-man in a comedy routine. Also includes the lesser companion-strip, Looie. Ink over graphite on conjoined sheets of Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 21.5". Slight toning, handling wear, and marginal staining. Paste-up logo is toned and wrinkled. In Very Good condition.
