Description

Lank Leonard Mickey Finn Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 3 (McNaught Syndicate, 1939) Leonard's favorite Mickey Finn character, garrulous Uncle Phil, appears in each of these non-consecutive episodes from a peak period for the Irish-family feature. The syndicate neglected to declare the year in its copyright statements, but a day-and-date calendar check and a uniformity of drawing/design style and dimensional measurements will place the pieces at 1939; episodes are marked as 8-10, 8-12, and 12-2. The unifying technique is Leonard's use of Craftint chemical-shading board, which imparts a range of moody greyscale tones. Various such episodes from this general period would reappear in Columbia Comics' Mickey Finn magazine (1943-1949). Ink over graphite. Image area, 17" x 4.5. Very good condition, with light/moderate age-toning.
