Description
L. Franklin Van Zelm The Christian Science Monitor Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (1940s). A prominent cartoonist for children during the 1920s-1930s, Van Zelm graduated to a long-standing editorialist position with The Christian Science Monitor during the 1940s-1950s. This late-in-World War II commentary finds the evils of the Axis powers catching up with them -- in the form of a clutching phantom. On the run (lower right) are Japan's Hideki Tojo, Germany's Adolf Hitler, and Italy's Benito Mussolini. The dominant spectral figure (drawn on a separate sheet and pasted in place) is emphasized by Van Zelm's use of an unusual white-on-black shading film, which signifies an otherworldly presence. Van Zelm's earlier body of work ranges from the Rusty & Bub strip for the New York Evening World; to a book of the Funny Animals variety, The Adventures of Monte & Molly (1938); to the distinctive "Eagle" label design for Maine's Summit Mineral Spring Water Bottling Co. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 12". Toned, with scuff-marks and tape residue.
