John Prentice Rip Kirby Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 6-9-71 (King Features Syndicate, 1971). For a featured bad guy called the Mangler, Prentice found a model in actor-wrestler Mike Mazurki, the movies' gold-standard portrayer of thugs and strongarm hoods. Mazurki's craggy face dominates this fine sequence, in which detective Rip Kirby finds himself in a standoff against the Mangler aboard a runaway train. A spectacular blend of lush blacks, varied linework, and bold composition. Prentice carried on for 43 years after creator Alex Raymond's death in 1956, the strip lasting until June 1999. Inscribed at lower margin. Image area, 17.5" x 5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.
