Description

John Cullen Murphy Prince Valiant #2589 Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-21-86 (King Features Syndicate, 1986). A dour King Arthur and a wary Prince Valiant ponder the mysterious disappearance of Mordred, the ruler's treacherous half-brother, in this sequence contrasting the elegance of the Arthurian Realm with the earthier dwarf-tribe of the Dawn People. Murphy had by now settled into full creative control of Harold R. Foster's classic feature; he had assisted Foster since an audition period in 1970 and then succeeded Foster in 1979. The script is the work of Murphy's son, John Cullen, Jr., who describes here the ancient custom of trading sons between societies as a peace-keeping gesture. Ink over graphite on conjoined sections of Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19.5". The lightly/moderately toned boards show minor handling wear, with white-out corrections and penciling at right. Very Good condition.
