Description

Jim Raymond (as Chic Young) Blondie Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-21-56 (King Features Syndicate, 1956). Dagwood Bumstead stumbles into an edgy, hilarious demonstration of the wise old saying, "No good deed unpunished." Raymond's job security was assured with creator Young, even if the syndicate denied Raymond a byline. Hence the term ghost-artist. The kid brother of Flash Gordon's Alex Raymond had started as an assistant on Blondie, then assumed full duties after Young's vision failed during the 1950s. (Young remained in charge of the writing.) This episode confronts Dagwood with a rescuer who becomes a moocher in short order. The bum is Raymond's homage to a historic comics character, Frederick Burr Opper's Happy Hooligan, in speech and demeanor. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17 x 15". The art has been halved between tiers two and three, with soiling along the separation line, pinholes, a stained logotype, and light edge wear; otherwise, the condition is Very Good.
