    J. David McFarland Dan Venture and Shagadoo Unpublished Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 60 (c. 1960). An immense lot of large-scale dailies, signed as J. D. McFarland and depicting the exploits of Dan Venture, secret agent and adventurer, in a Cold War setting. Additional small reproductions of several strips resemble syndicate proofs. An additional four original-art strips, titled Shagadoo, have a fairytale-type setting. McFarland, a Phoenix-based journalist, appears to have pitched these features for syndication, to no avail. An impressive body of work, all the same, with a style suggesting an emulation of big-timers Milton Caniff (Steve Canyon) and John Prentice (Rip Kirby). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 7". Excellent condition.
