    Description

Harry J. Tuthill (as H.J. Tuthill) The Bungle Family and Little Brother Sunday Comic Strips Original Art Group of 3 (McClure Syndicate, 1930). Tuthill's brilliant satire of middle-class household life makes Dagwood Bumstead look like a model of stability and decorum. In the one dated strip of this nifty batch (7-20-30), Mr. Bungle outwits a forgetful landlord -- only to find his gag backfiring. In the undated Sunday spread, Mr. Bungle revisits his old neighborhood, where he finds his ex-neighbors as hostile as he had remembered. Each is accompanied by an episode of Tuthill's topliner strip, Little Brother, involving street-smart children. Two of the pieces are hand-colored, one with handwritten color-engraving instructions. Notes from the artist on reverse. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with watercolor tinting. Image areas range from 21.25" x 12" to 21.25" x 16. Moderate toning, with marginal punctures and light edge deterioration. Very Good condition.
