Hal Foster Tarzan Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-14-32 (United Feature Syndicate, 1932). An exciting and even historic Sunday from its third year, this episode that was the second part of the "The Elephant's Graveyard" story arc. Titled "The Apes of Tarzan's Tribe" this Sunday features many of the Mangani Great Apes of Tarzan's personal tribe. Even without a battle scene, Hal Foster has plenty of conflict as Tarzan is injured and must be rescued by his family of Apes. Of note, at this time Johnny Weissmuller was swinging through the silver screen in the movie Tarzan the Ape Man wearing just a loin cloth. Previous to this in the newspaper strip, Foster had Tarzan in an over-the-shoulder leopard skin (the preferred costume of sideshow strong men in cartoons and movies). To make the movie and comic strip match up, this episode shows that Tarzan cut off the shoulder piece to make a sling (In the header panel), and he wore just a loin cloth in the strip for years after that. There are so many stunning panels in this Sunday that it's hard to pick a favorite. It was created at an oversized scale (as is Foster's wont) in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 19.5" x 26.5". There is a 2" rip in the right side. A smaller half-inch rip above that (mended with tape from the backside), and a 14" diagonal crease from the top right corner (with tape supporting it from the backside). There is discoloration on both bottom corners. Overall, it has high eye-appeal and is in Very Good condition. New to the market, this piece has been in a private collector's hands for 30 years.
