Description
Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip #523 Original Art dated 2-16-47 (King Features Syndicate, 1947). Aleta, revealed to be pregnant with Val's first child, Arn, is captured by Ulfrun the Viking raider, and put into bondage. However, she soon proves to be more formidable than expected in this lovely page by master artist Foster. This outstanding Sunday begins a long adventure with Prince Valiant tracking down his abducted wife to the Americas over the course of the next thirteen weeks. Considered by many to be one of the aesthetic high points of the strip, rendering the north woods setting of Val's New World adventure was clearly near and dear to the heart of Canadian-born Foster. Highlighting this historically significant page is not only the stirring "swearing by the Singing Sword" panel number two and a rare appearance by Val's father, King Aguar, but a particularly strong example of Foster's supreme storytelling skills. Of note is the "mini-story" of a secondary character's interaction with Aleta in panels 5 - 9. Without a word being written about him, by the time this leering sailor receives his fatal comeuppance from Aleta's blade, the reader feels he absolutely deserved his fate. Additionally, this strip saw a rare example of Syndicate censorship. In the 6th panel, the original text seen on the art of of Aleta being bound "...to his couch..." were replaced by the printed "...by her wrists..." to soften the sexual overtones.As always, the art is first class all the way, created in ink over graphite with red ink keylines on three pieces of Bristol board. The boards are combined with tape, and have an overall image area of 24.25" x 33.75". The artboards have light staining and handling wear, with a few pasted-on caption corrections loose or missing; still, the individual panels have plenty of eye-appeal (especially of Aleta in bondage) and the page remains a superb example of Foster's brilliant line work.
