Description

Hal Foster Prince Valiant Partial Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-6-40 (King Features Syndicate, 1940). Here's an incredible, enormous splash panel that took up the bottom two-thirds of the October 6, 1940 Sunday page. It is without a doubt one of the best images you'll ever see from this beloved, long-running strip. Artist Hal Foster filled the panel with extra detail -- one could spend hours looking at the exquisite shading and costume elements!

The "last hope for the Roman Empire," General Aetius, has been murdered, with Val and Sir Tristram held by Roman soldiers as suspects. General Aetius, featured in a number of Prince Valiant strips prior to this, was a real person whose death in 454 A.D. signaled the end of the Roman Empire. Hal Foster was fond of incorporating actual historical events into his storylines, and the Fall of Rome would be a reoccurring theme for the next 20 years of the strip; here, the General's assassination leads to Val and the Mighty Tristram being framed, arrested, and imprisoned. This historic scene from the early days of Prince Valiant would help shape the story for decades to come.

The art is in ink over graphite on board, with an approximate image area of 28" x 22", matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 34" x 28.75". A few tears along the outer edges have been professionally repaired, and the board has tanned a bit; red ink keylines visible mainly along the bottom image area have for the most part turned brown. Overall Very Good condition.
