Description

Gus Mager Sherlocko the Monk Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst's American-Journal-Examiner Syndicate, c. 1910s). In "The Case of the Frightened Fisherman", Sherlocko and faithful Watso untangle the mystery of the missing fishing gear, discovering the "net" had simply been re-strung for a tennis match. A delightfully clever gag and a true rarity from over a century ago, this early Gus Mager strip is only the third we've ever offered. Debuting in 1910, the series playfully parodied Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous sleuth so closely that Doyle threatened legal action, prompting a name change to Hawkshaw the Detective in 1913. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 8.75" x 12.25", matted to 14.25" x 18.5". Toning, with heavier toning on the edges, a hint of foxing, smudging, staining, marginal notes, corner creasing, marginal pinholes, and corner/handling wear. In Very Good condition.
