    Description

George McManus Cheerful Charley Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (New York World Publ., 1900s). The title character is a dour Indian in tribal attire, surrounded by funny people but refusing to laugh. McManus' early strip (well before Bringing Up Father) is distinguished here by a caricatured guest appearance from Simeon Ford (1855-1933), a real-world humorist who was among the first to use the one-liner style favored by stand-up comedians. McManus' masterstroke, here, is to wallow in cornball humor while simultaneously using Cheerful Charley to pronounce the gags unfunny. An early stirring of genius in an essential cartoonist. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 10.75". Unusually light toning, given the age. Edge wear and marginal moisture-staining. Very Good condition.
