Description

George Herriman Krazy Kat Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-10-16 (King Features, 1916). Hoy! Hoy! Hoy! here's one of the best examples of George Herriman's celebrated comic strip we've seen in our thirteen years of Heritage Comics auctions. In this full page Sunday, Ignatz thinks he sees a ghost while walking through the graveyard at night. Of course it turns out to be Krazy Kat, but that doesn't stop Ignatz from telling a whopper of a story about his spooky encounter. The three panels featuring Krazy rising up from behind a tombstone are remarkable, and need to be seen in person to appreciate; one panel is so dark, one can hardly make out the image of Krazy's head as it rises up, and in the next, all we can see are her glowing eyes!
Finding such a wonderful Sunday page is one thing, but factor in the exceptional condition of something nearly one hundred years old, and you'll understand why this an incredibly rare and classic piece of American Comic Art. It's one of the earliest Krazy Kat Sundays we've seen to date, and certainly one of the nicest. The art is in ink and graphite on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 18.25" x 21.5". There is a tiny bit of handling wear, and there is a pinhole to the left of the second panel, a small crease in the upper left corner, and a few minor stains, but none of these imperfections really detract from the eye-appeal of this simply gorgeous page. We're calling the condition Very Good, but it's just a stone's throw -- make that a brick's toss -- from Excellent. Any fan of the strip will love this page; as Herriman says in the final panel, "Toobee Shoor!"
