    Description

George Herriman Bernie Burns a.k.a. Embarrassing Moments Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-3-31 (King Features Syndicate, 1931). A persistent safecracker digs into a vault -- only to find the bank ruined by the Great Depression. Poignant irony from the creator of Krazy Kat. This understated gag panel ran apace with Herriman's famous exercise in poetic surrealism, and is just as beautifully drawn -- even though Bernie Burns lasted only into 1932 under Herriman's stewardship. The recurring gag involves a procession of Embarrassing Moments -- which in fact had been the title of the feature before Herriman took charge in 1928. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with extreme crosshatching. The image area measures 7" x 7", and the selection is in Excellent condition.
