Gene Byrnes, Charles D. Small, and Others Reg'lar Fellers and Additional Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 4 (Various Syndicates, 1923-1929). Byrnes wrote the book on cartooning -- literally. His Complete Guide to Cartooning (1947), featuring many famous guest-artists, remains a standard reference in the development of comic strips and related art. He practiced what he taught, too: His Reg'lar Fellers (seen here in its 11-27-26 episode) is a classic of kid-stuff comedy. This example also contains a reference to Olympian swimmer and future Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller. Here, too, is the Christmas Day (1925) episode of Doc Winner's similarly conceived Tubby. Also represented is Ad Carter's near-simultaneous Just Kids (9-3-23). Largest of the lot is a two-foot-wide Salesman Sam (12-26-29) by Small, a heavy concentration of rambunctious silliness. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 19" x 6" to 25" x 6.5". All but Salesman Sam show moderate toning, in Very Good condition. The Sam shows heavy age-toning and brittleness, in Fair Condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
