Description

Gene Ahern Room and Board Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-15-37 (King Features Syndicate, 1937). Any resemblance to Our Boarding House with Major Hoople is intentional: Ahern had introduced Hoople in 1922 at NEA Features, scoring such a sustained success that in 1936 King Features lured him away to develop the Major Hoople-like Judge Puffle for Room and Board. This early example pictures Puffle as a chronic procrastinator, daydreaming of adventure while stalling and boasting. Hoople would remain the gold-standard character among comic-strip blowhards, but Puffle was nonetheless the genuine article, too. Lively, character-rich drawing, with dialogue and environmental details to match -- note the junkyard condition of the Judge's workplace. Image area, 12" x 11". The lightly toned board contains a glue-stained copyright bug. Very Good condition.
From the Bobby G. Murphy Collection.
