Description

Gene Ahern Our Boarding House with Major Hoople Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-25-35 (NEA Service, Inc., 1935). Blowhard Amos Hoople is flabbergasted to encounter Bad News Burke -- a failed prizefighter whom the Major once had managed. Burke lives up to his nickname: A moocher, as boastful as Hoople himself. First-rate character-driven gagwriting, from a bygone time when the words carried equal weight with the pictures. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 11". A prominent element of composition, a blue-line oval surrounding Major Hoople, points up Ahern's emphasis upon his star character: Nobody upstages Amos Hoople, not even a tough mug like Bad News Burke. (The blue wax-pencil line was invisible to the engraving camera.) Moderately age-toned, darker about the scuffed and partially torn margins. Very Good condition.
