Description
Garry Trudeau and Don Carlton Doonesbury Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-2-74 (Universal Press, 1974). The Watergate scandals loom large in this pivotal episode of the influential satire strip. Richard M. Nixon (off-camera) rehearses for the most difficult of a series of speeches addressing the backlash. Less than two months after this piece saw print, the President would release partial transcriptions of the notorious White House Tapes. His resignation speech was only five months away. Sparely drawn, repetitive artwork, with slight variations in each panel, emphasizes the dark humor. (Note the barbed-wire barricade.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 14.5" x 5". Scattered white-paint retouching. Excellent condition.More information about Garry Trudeau. See also: Trudeau, Garry Artist.
