Description

Garry Trudeau and Don Carlton Doonesbury Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-15-79 (Universal Press Syndicate, 1979). Recurring character Uncle Duke, an amoral trickster originally modeled after maverick journalist Hunter S. Thompson, wakes in an unfamiliar hotel room and harangues the front desk: "Where am I?" A bizarre interlude from the influential satire strip. Sparely drawn, deliberately repetitive artwork (slight variations in each panel) emphasizes the sardonic, absurdist humor. Trudeau's signature (in water-soluble ink) has faded where the main body of the drawing (indelible ink) has remained full-bodied, although areas of shading film have eroded in Panels 2 and 4. Ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board. The image area is 14.5" x 5", with moderate toning from exposure to ambient light (evenly distributed). Very Good condition.
From the David Mandel Collection.
