Description

Gahan Wilson Gahan Wilson Sunday Comics Single Panel Original Art dated 12-19-76 (Register & Tribune Syndicate, 1976). Playboy magazine knew how to handle Wilson's off-the-wall humor and made a sustained sensation of his horror-comedy cartoons. National Lampoon knew how to handle Wilson's more intimate reflections and established his autobiographical feature, Nuts, as a popular serialized memoir. Register & Tribute Syndicate -- not so much, although the weekly Gahan Wilson Sunday Comics series is as brilliant and bittersweet as anything else that great artist ever produced. The unconventional attraction was not a comic strip, as such, but rather a layout of four or five individual cartoons, arrayed in weekly installments. The present selection is one such panel, self-contained though removed from the Sunday-spread context. Wilson, as usual, was ahead of the game: The creepy doll pictured here anticipates film producer Davis Kirschner's Child's Play, or Chucky, franchise by 12 years. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 7.5" x 4.5". Excellent condition, barring one small spot-stain.
