Description

Gaar Williams Wotta Life! Wotta Life! Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art Undated (Chicago Tribune-NY News Syndicate, c. 1920s). Williams was doing generation-gap cartoons long before any such term had been coined. In this splendidly nerve-wracking gag, a father finds that the marbles-playing skills of his boyhood do not impress a new generation of smart-alecks. Caption: "An exhibition shot by a former champion..." The reflective effect on the father's glasses is a small masterpiece of delicate brushwork. The autograph on this one is special: "To my friend Carl Ed." Ed was the creator of Harold Teen, the comic strip that anticipated Archie by many years. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 15". Pronounced age-toning and attendant brittleness, with barked corners and one three-inch tear/crack at upper left. Good condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
