Gaar Williams Something Ought To Be Done about This Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1929-30). Williams sustained a bold momentum as a star cartoonist with the Chicago Trib, delivering day after day of bright sarcasm and satiric observations, to the extent that millions of subscribers would wake up wondering, "What's that Gaar Williams guy up to today?" This generous sampling from his Depression-era heyday covers such universally timeless topics as smart-aleck kids (9-14-29), a Christmas wish fulfilled to the wisher's frustration (1-4-30), an obsession with household pets (1-6-30), and a chronic traffic problem (4-26-30). Even the artist's name, Gaar (of Dutch/French origin), implies a humorous and outgoing nature. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 13" square.
