Description

Gaar Williams Something Ought To be Done about This Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 5-15-29 (Chicago Tribune, 1929). Anybody who has ever suffered through a lousy vacation can relate to this splendid installment, which catches Williams' signature Everyman character reminiscing fondly about an excursion he had not enjoyed in person. This feature became, in turn, an inspiration to Jimmy Hatlo's They'll Do It Every Time. So attuned is Williams' vision to the awkward realities of everyday life, that his cartoons remained in print almost a generation after his death: This piece, formally dated at 1929, features rubber-stamp documentation (on reverse) showing a re-engraving order in 1947. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 13". Moderate age-toning, with barked edges and marginal scuffing. Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.
