Description
Gaar Williams How To Keep from Growing Old Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1929). The shared title is ironic and grimly hilarious: By How To Keep from Growing Old, Williams meant, essentially, "How to die young while pursuing youth." This informal suite depicts, by turns, a perilous onslaught of dining etiquette (2-1-29); a violent riposte to the 1920s' fad for radio-exercise programs (2-8-29); a bad time to be mooching tobacco (5-29-29); and a suicidal attempt to catch a pop-fly at the stadium (5-1-29). The baseball piece is a masterpiece of dizzying vertical perspective. The 2-1 piece features Mort Green, Williams' autobiographical surrogate. Williams is right up there with H.T. Webster and J.R. Williams in terms of gold-standard panel-gaggery. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" square. Toning and handling wear commensurate with age. Condition: Very Good.
