Description

Gaar Williams How To Keep from Growing Old Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1929). Willams' occasional title, How To Keep from Growing Old, referred not so much to perpetual youth, as it suggested a premature death. That ominous connotation figures especially in the centerpiece of the present selection -- a lampoon of the once-fashionable daredevil practice of surfing Niagara Falls in a barrel (10-1-29). Except that Williams suggests waiting for a freeze and then riding a sled. He also examines the torments of snow-shoveling (3-7-29); takes a stand against trampling on a newly seeded lawn (7-22-29); and examines the perils of picnicking in a vermin-infested glade (5-2-29). Splendid examples, here, of the artist's impeccable brushwork and snide wit. The 7-22 cartoon features an extreme perspective (note the extended arm) of a sort that would become a stock-in-trade device of a comic-book genius named Jack Kirby. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" square. Toning and handling wear commensurate with age. Condition: Very Good.
From the Ray Edw Collection.
