Description
Gaar Williams How To Keep from Growing Old Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 9-18-29 (Chicago Tribune, 1929). Williams' chronic survey of self-serving human behavior takes a turn into exaggerated violence as one offhand remark provokes a stampede. Williams usually worked in single-panel format, but here he requires two panels (stacked) to describe the sudden frenzy. His technique calls for exaggerated motion lines, which he achieves by scratching the inked surface with the point of a blade. Brilliant. The artist's staying power is underscored by a stamped engraving order (reverse) for a 1943 reprint, long after Williams' death. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 13". Pronounced age-toning and smudging, with marginal editorial notes and surface erosion at right. Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.More information about Gaar Williams.
