    Description

Fred Thomas Long Shots Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Hall Syndicate, 1962-63). A fine example of the Minimalist School of gag comics, Thomas makes the work look simple -- but that approach, done right, is anything but easy. The secret lies in knowing what details to leave to the reader's imagination. Long Shots delivers a streamlined, consistently amusing, running commentary on the sporting world, from ice-fishing in the hockey rink to boxing on the basketball court. The astonishing quality is that Thomas is working without the traditional safety net of pencil sketching: The ink seems to know precisely where to go. The strips are dated 12-17-62, 12-18-62, 12-19-62, 12-20-62, 12-21-62, 12-26-62, 12-28-62, 12-29-62, 12-31-62, 1-2-63, and 1-3-63. Ink and painted white retouching on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 5.25". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
