Frank Thorne (as Franklin Thorne) Dr. Guy Bennett Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-1-61 (Lafave Newspaper Features, 1961). Long before he became known as the wild-man wizard-artist of Marvel's Red Sonja books, Thorne was producing Dr. Guy Bennett as a low-key feature in the tradition of Rex Morgan, M.D., or Judge Parker. Thorne's style at this stage is inventive and almost abstract, with a minimalist, high-contrast touch reminiscent of his friend Alex Toth. Thorne's syndicate patron, Arthur J. LaFave, rechristened the strip as Dr. Duncan later in 1961. The feature was discontinued (along with the syndicate itself) upon LaFave's death in 1963. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 6". Slight toning, more pronounced at edges; otherwise, in Excellent condition.
