Description

Frank Bolle (signing as Stan Drake) The Heart of Juliet Jones Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-8-89 (King Features Syndicate, 1989). Despite a drastic shrinkage in its display space -- from 18" wide in the 1960s to just over a foot by 1989 -- Juliet Jones remained a high-water mark in dramatic illustration for the funnypapers. Although Drake's name remained attached, Bolle had taken over the feature in 1982 and would remain on deck until the turning of the century. This cut-and-paste example contains some photocopied Drake-style faces (panels 1-2), retouched with pen-and-ink. The third panel is pure Bolle, with an altogether different style of physical delineation. Ink and collage elements over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 13" x 4". Heavy adhesive staining on pasted areas. Good condition.
