Description

Eugene Hughes Mike Regan Comic Strip Pilot Page Original Art (1950s). Prolific war-and-horror artist Hughes entertained ambitions bigger than his lot with the small-time comic-book publishers. Hughes invented the Mike Regan detective feature as a hopeful gateway. Which never happened, though not for want of trying. In addition to a selection of horizontal strip-format tryouts, Hughes prepared this vertical introductory page -- which theoretically would have been used to announce the feature. A real treasure, here, with the haunting air of a keen story that might have been. In a notable humanizing touch, the hand-lettered text contains a conspicuous misspelling ("beautifull") and a misplaced punctuation mark ("Ritas'" for "Rita's"). Ink over graphite on illustration board. Image area, 13" x 16.5". Moderate toning, minor spot-staining, and handling wear. Very Good condition.
