Description

Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-9-41 (United Feature Syndicate, 1941). Bushmiller usually avoided ethnic variety in his famous comic strip, lest his tendency to draw in caricature seem extreme or exaggerated. (Or so Bushmiller told comics historians Michael H. Price and George E. Turner in 1968.) But here the master humorist makes an exception with a smart Asian character named Floy Floy -- who finds an unusual use for a set of chopsticks while visiting a zoo. Nancy Ritz is flabbergasted, but the monkey seems to like the idea. Floy Floy is not properly a Chinese name, but rather a nonsense phrase popularized by jazz artists Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart in a hit recording of 1938, "Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy Floy)" -- a sign of Bushmiller's preference for swing-band music. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 22" x 5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.
From the Denis Kitchen Collection.
