Description

Eric Stanton Tin Hats Wartime Daily Comic Strip Panel dated 2-29-44 Original Art (Bell Syndicate, 1944). A battlefront bombing catches a U.S. soldier off-guard as he digs into a canned delicacy. "Quick," demands a sergeant, "Gimme them peaches before all that junk starts comin' down!" A mascot-dog (lower right) appears suitably startled. Stanton's tough-minded and sarcastic Tin Hats lasted but a few years in syndication, leading the precocious Stanton to formal art studies, and then to the notorious semi-underground idiom of bondage cartoons, which would become the focus of his career for the longer term. Stanton shared a studio with Marvel Comics' Steve Ditko, although Ditko steered clear of Stanton's kinkier cartooning. The signature matches between the far-removed idioms, with the likeness complicated by the artist's extreme youth in the 1940s. Tin Hats compares favorably with the World War II documentary-type cartoons of Bill Mauldin, and with Milton Caniff's sustained show of humorous respect for foot-soldiers in Male Call. The present selection comprises ink and crayon over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 6.5" x 7.5". Lightly toned/scuffed and in Very Good condition.
