Description

Eric Stanton Tin Hats Wartime Daily Comic Strip Panel dated 11-18 Original Art (Bell Syndicate, c. 1942). Jailed in London on account of socking a copper, an American soldier throws a futile tantrum when a sergeant consoles him: "But cheer up - I'll take yer girl home fer ya!" World War II brought out the sardonic wit in Stanton, a precocious teenager treading on the combat concerns of such more mature cartoonists as Bill Mauldin and Milton Caniff. This specimen is undated as to year, but its comparatively large dimensions (6.5" x 7.5") suggest the formative period of 1942. The tough-minded Tin Hats lasted but a few years in syndication, leading the precocious Stanton to formal art studies, and then to the notorious semi-underground idiom of bondage cartoons, which would become the focus of his career for the longer term. Ink and crayon over graphite on Bristol board. Lightly toned/scuffed and in Very Good condition.
