Description

Eric Stanton Tin Hats Wartime Daily Comic Strip Panel dated 10-14 Original Art (Bell Syndicate, 1940s). The caption is missing, but Stanton's signature soldiers (at large in Australia) are patently more concerned with ogling than with combat. The teenaged artist suggests the horndog longings of his G.I.s by giving each a case of Popeye-Mouth Syndrome, a sideways curl of the lip. Tin Hats lasted but a few years in syndication, leading the precocious Stanton to formal art studies, and then to the notorious semi-underground idiom of bondage cartoons - the long-term focus of his career. Tin Hats bears a kinship to the World War II documentary-style cartoons of Bill Mauldin, and to Milton Caniff's sustained show of good-humored respect for foot-soldiers in Male Call. Ink and crayon over graphite on toned Bristol board. Image area, 6.5" x 7.5". Handling wear and adhesive staining. Very Good condition.
