    Description

David Wright Carol Day Daily Comic Strip Original Art #1701 undated (London Daily Mail, c. 1960s). A high-water mark of the art form. Though internationally syndicated to some 70 newspapers, the veddy British Carol Day remained based in London from its beginnings in 1956 until Wright's death in 1967 (King Features, which had courted the artist, nonetheless found the strip "too sophisticated" for the American market). The dimensionally deep, woodcut-like inks; the heavy shadowplay; and the understated, conversational dialogue. Ink over graphite on fine Colyer & Southey Illustration board, with an image area of 18.5" x 5.25". Faint toning. Very Good condition.
