Description

Cy Hungerford Two Down -- One To Go! Editorial Comics Panel Inscribed Original Art (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 1945). Hungerford depicts Boeing's B29 Superfortress bomber as a pitchfork to skewer the Axis nation of Japan as World War II approaches a climax. Tough-minded, prophetic commentary as usual from Hungerford, whose work distinguished the Post-Gazette from 1927 to 1977. An inscription (lower left) bears the date of 5-11-45, approximately three months before the B29 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The caricatured personification of Japan was a constant among wartime American editorialists, who employed ridicule as a device to diminish the perceived ferocity of enemy nations. Ink over graphite on lightly toned Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 14.5". Excellent condition.
