Description

Cy Hungerford Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Post-Gazette, 1940s). As a comical cartoonist, Hungerford adapted strikingly well to his WWII role as an Axis-buster editorialist -- angry and humorous, at a stroke. Congress, pictured a prizefighter, squares off against an apelike Adolf Hitler as a ringside Uncle Sam warns, "Forget your fancy political steps, kid!" Hungerford titled this piece "No Place for a Misstep!" in declaring, in essence, that civility and statesmanship are of no use against a brutal adversary. An editorial note (lower margin) designates the cartoon as a rush job for the following Thursday's bulldog edition of the Post-Gazette. The archaic term bulldog once referred to the earliest press run of an issue, back when newspapers were produced with care and timely diligence. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 15.75". Moderate toning and handling wear. Very Good condition.
